Dear Honors English Student:

Congratulations! You have elected to take a rigorous English course.  A grade of 90% or higher in your current English class is required to take an English Honors class. This class includes not only summer reading, but also an increased reading and writing workload during the course itself. In order to ensure success in this course you will need to keep up with all your assignments; extra curricular activities do not excuse late work.

The summer reading requirements for each grade level honors course and also Advanced Placement English are listed below. During the first week of school in September 2008, you will be tested on the required reading. You must score cumulatively 80% or higher (79% is not acceptable) in order to remain in the class. There are no exceptions in regards to the summer reading requirement and exam.

The JHHS Library has copies of these books that you will be able to check out for the summer.  Ask at the circulation desk.

Honors English I:

Great Expectations
by Charles Dickens

Honors English III: (three novels)

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte

Brave New World by Aldous Huxley

Animal Farm by George Orwell

Advanced Placement English: (three novels)

Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky

Tess of the D’Ubervilles by Thomas Hardy

Lord of the Flies by William Golding

Literature Study: Crime and Punishment is clearly the most difficult of the
three summer novels. You are expected to complete typed answers
(thoughtful, complete sentences) to study questions provided for this novel.
Study question responses are due the first day back at school. There are no
study questions for Tess of the D’Urbervilles and Lord of the Flies. Read the
novels carefully—the summer reading test will cover all three books.

Once again, congratulations on electing to take Honors English.  Local bookstores, as well as the public library, will be notified of the summer reading books.  Summer reading information and assignments can be accessed as follows:
