The Old Man and the Sea
Mr. Squyres
DISCUSSION GROUP
Yo, ho, ho and a barrel of hot buttered popcorn on a late summer night, curled up with a good book, when school is still weeks away. How do I get started? I put the popcorn in the microwave. I turn on the computer and go to my facebook page. I get something cold to drink out of the fridge. I put on something wavy or fishy or at least boaty-rocky to play softly in the background. I get the popcorn out of the microwave and fish the burned pieces out (fish - get it?) and put the rest in a bowl. I curl up with the book I got from the media center before school ended (yea - sorry, it still feels good) oh, wait. ERASE, ERASE, ERASE. I forgot to get a membership on that page from Squyres.
I go back to my facebook page and go to Earl.Squyres@gmail.com's membership page on facebook and ask to be his friend (yuk - friends with a teacher, especially an old, fat, bald, ugly one - thank goodness it's only till school starts) and tell him it's for "The Old Man and the Sea." (He got that right!). He will invite me to join the group and to get the secret page of instructions which will tell me what to do and what to look for and what to read. Okay.

I get the popcorn out of the microwave and fish the burned pieces out (fish - get it - I got it the first time) and put the rest in a bowl. I curl up with the book I got from the media center before school ended (YEA - sorry, it feels better the second time) and start to read, "The Old Man and the Sea," by Ernest Hemingway, page one. . .this is not so bad.

Dear AP English Student:
Welcome to Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition. This course is based on close reading and detailed analysis of a variety of novels, short stories, poetry, and essays from around the world chosen to compliment our school’s 9th through 11th grade English curriculum. Above all else, this class is a thinking class—you will reflect more deeply on meaning and implication and its application to life than you have in previous years. Just like a biologist seeks to understand the mystery of life through science, or a mathematician looks to numbers and formulas to shed light on this chaotic world, so the student of literature reads to deepen understanding of life and the human condition.
Participation in this class includes reading three summer reading books. During the first week of school in September 2009, you will be tested on the required reading. The grade you receive on the summer reading test will be the first grade entered in your grade report. There are no exceptions in regards to the summer reading requirement and exam.
Advanced Placement English: (three novels)
Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky
Tess of the D’Ubervilles by Thomas Hardy
Lord of the Flies by William Golding
Literature Study: Crime and Punishment is clearly the most difficult of the
three summer novels. You are expected to complete typed answers
(thoughtful, complete sentences) to study questions provided on line for this
novel. Crime and Punishment is composed of 6 parts and an epilogue. I suggest
completing each section of study questions as you finish that portion of reading.
Study question responses are due the first day back at school. STUDY QUESTIONS
There are no study questions for Tess of the D’Urbervilles and Lord of the Flies. Read the novels carefully—the summer reading test will cover all three books.
